Huawei has introduced a new smartphone processor, the Kirin 9050 Pro, combining a Huawei-designed CPU, GPU, neural processing unit, and modem into a single chip. The new silicon debuts inside the company’s Mate XT2, a triple-fold smartphone, and is built to handle on-device AI tasks.
U.S. export restrictions were designed to slow China’s access to advanced chipmaking tools and high-performance processors. Despite that, Chinese companies keep investing heavily in domestic chip design and manufacturing. Each new Huawei chip generation is a test of how fast the country’s semiconductor industry is closing the gap with global leaders like Apple, Qualcomm, and Samsung.
For consumers, it’s a reminder that the smartphone chip race isn’t just an Apple-vs-Samsung story anymore — Chinese manufacturers are increasingly building competitive, fully in-house hardware, even under tight restrictions.
